Our Hen House TV!

Hey y’all! First, I hope you all know about & support Our Hen House! If you’re unfamiliar, then it’s time to get with it! Our Hen House is a non-profit organization whose mission is to "change the world for animals" using video, audio, interviews, reviews, & the written word. The OHH website provides up to the minute daily updates on what you need to create change. With their weekly podcast, Jasmin & Mariann interview inspiring activists, chefs, entrepreneurs, & all around changemakers. In addition, it’s full of sassy chit-chat, insightful commentary, a bit of gossip, & plenty of profanity (just a warning if you’re sensitive to that kind of thing!) as they review new hot products, companies, & media. They are entertaining, informative & all around awesome advocates for the animals. 

Just recently they launched Our Hen House TV, in partnership with Brooklyn Entertainment Media. A vegan themed talk show! How cool is that! Here’s what they have to say about it:

Cauliflower Pizza from Raw. Vegan. Not Gross.

If you’re not subscribed to Tastemade’s You Tube Channel so you can keep up on the latest installment of Raw. Vegan. Not Gross. then you are sadly missing out. Laura Miller, of San Fran’s Side Saddle Kitchen, is charming, adorable, oftentimes hilarious, & makes totally delicious, all vegan & raw-ish food. This is one of may all time favorite online cooking “shows” & I look forward to it every week. So get to it!!

Aaahhh cauliflower. Broccoli’s pale & bland cousin! I happen to love it, now. But it took a long time, & it wasn’t until I tried it roasted & smothered with tons of lemon-tahini sauce, that I gave it a fair chance. I loved it when Laura said, ”Cauliflower is like the kid that got picked last in gym class,” so true. And, I happen to think that raw cauliflower tastes & smells like musty gym socks. Not that I know for sure, mind you, I’ve never actually tasted gym socks, nor do I ever plan to…it’s my imagination running wild. Oh, just nevermind…

I’ve been seeing recipes for “cauliflower pizza” popping up all over the web & I must say I am intrigued. In this video, Laura shows the step by step process of putting together a raw vegan pizza with a cauliflower crust & it sounds pretty amazing. 

Well that settles it. I need really want a dehydrator. Not that I have the space for ANOTHER kitchen gadget, but whatevs…I have a birthday coming up…hint, hint! 

Rosemary Chocolate Chip Cookies from Isa’s “Make it Vegan” Series!

So, when it comes to all things vegan, we know that Isa Chandra is the Reigning Queen. I mean, I really. Right? When I first started looking into veganism "Veganomicon" was my Bible, & that is often the case with many others I speak to. It’s always the first book I recommend to anyone looking to go vegan. It’s cool, it’s friendly, the recipes are awesome. And when I got into baking - "VCTOTW" & "VCIYCJ" were essential. I’ve never made a cookie or cupcake that didn’t delight from either of those books. Foolproof recipes that will make the veg curious a full on believer! 

Then I got to meet Isa, brush elbows with her, & take a her iPhonography class as the VVC 2011. Lucky me, I know! And, guess what? She really is cool as cool as you think. Like, mad cool. 

So anyway the point of all of this carrying on & Isa loving & that she’s done it again. Literally. Her new cookbook, "Isa Does It!" just hit the shelves, & though it hasn’t hit my shelf yet (I’m on a cookbook buying moratorium) it is on my Christmas list (hint, hint). So until I can revel in the pages of her new book (which is full of drool inducing photography I hear), I’ve been enjoying the weekly release of "Make it Vegan!," Isa’s new video series. While I’ve certainly been fond of all the videos thus far, this vid for "Rosemary Chocolate Chip Cookies" really sparked my interest. Rosemary is one of my favorite herbs, especially, this time of year & makes me nostalgic for holiday time in the mountains! While its beautiful on roasted root veggies & sweet potatoes — putting it in a cookie? Who woulda thunk it? Isa, of course!  So I bought some rosemary & some vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips with every intention of making the recipe so I could give a real time review. However, I must be honest shamefully admit, I ate the whole bag of chocolate chips over the course of last week. Mini handfuls at a time, mind you. But still, that’s how it went down. I was too lazy to make cookies. How weird would it be if I ate the rosemary too, a handful at a time? Well, THAT, I promise, I didn’t do.

Anyway, now that you know I like to stuff my face with handfuls of chocolate chips, I will leave you with this video & I encourage you to watch all the videos (while eating handfuls of chocolate chips!) - there will be 10 total! Yay!

OMG! These look delish. I am becoming increasingly more & more intrigued by raw food (& secretly am flirting with the idea of becoming a raw vegan chef, shhhh!). Must start watching all of Sidesaddle Kitchen’s videos!

Cheesy Crescent Dogs

Who’s craving comfort food? I am! I ALWAYS am! And videos like these just feed the cravings! One of my favorite childhood comfort foods was what my Mom called "Pigs in a Blanket," made with veggie dogs, of course, but would often involve dairy cheese, & puffed pastry that likely wasn’t vegan. In this video, Jenny & Heather of Spork Foods, ignite my childhood nostalgia with their quick & easy recipe "Cheesy Crescent Dogs" made with vegan puffed pastry, veggie dogs, & Go Veggie! Vegan Mexican Style Shreds.

A perfect snack for kids, & kids at heart! I want to make a tray of these now! 

VIDEO: quarrygirl presents veggie grill

I’m not sure how this is possible, but I have yet to eat at Veggie Grill. Believe meit’s on the top of my list & I hear amazing things about their "All Hail Kale Salad with Blackened Tempeh."So happy to see that Veggie Grill is expanding, & rumor has it they’re coming to San Diego too! Here’s to vegan food taking over the world!

we have been long time fans of the hearty comfort food at veggie grill, & now it looks like the rest of the nation is catching on as well. the entirely vegan fast-casual chain was recently named in forbes’ list of “15 explosively growing companies to watch”, & currently has 20 locations across 3 states with plans to open several more this year. we caught up with co-founder & “chief foodie” ray white to chat about what makes their delicious cuisine both healthy & unique. 

Wow. The Blackfish trailer gave me the chills. I will never support Sea World, ever. This riveting documentary will be released internationally in July. Click here for screening dates & locations.

Very intrigued by this trailer for Blackfish, a new documentary about Tilikum, a performing whale at SeaWorld that swallowed its trainer whole.

“Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the film attempts to uncover what caused the incident, exposing never before seen footage and interviews from the scandalous but widely hushed up case. We also see the true nature of the corrupt and profitable sea-park industry, including the disillusionment of workers who have had their safety jeopardised and the extraordinarily cruel treatment of orcas in captivity.”

The film is scheduled to be released in the UK in July.

As mentioned in the Good Eats interview, M Cafe de Chaya is one of quarrygirl’s favorite Los Angeles vegan establishments. Although I’ve only been there a small handful of times, M Cafe is definitely one of my top dining picks in LA too, & surely some place I wish to visit again & again. There is too much vegan coolness going on in LA. Oh, heck maybe I should just move there…ain’t nothing holding me back, no more!

Anyhoo, in this awesome vid, quarrygirl features chef Lee Gross, who breaks down some of the dishes that make M Cafe! Ooooooh, I’m hungry! I’ll take a “Big Macro” please!

All Aboard the Wellness Reboot!

At the beginning of the year Christy Morgan, the Blissful Chef, launched "Wellness Reboot", an online, vegan, 28-day health & wellness program designed to help busy individuals transition to a healthful plant-based diet. Christy more recently launched the “Wellness Reboot a la Carte” program, designed for individuals who don’t need the one-on-one coaching, & feel more confident going it alone. The "a la carte" program includes everything stated above, except the coaching. A la carte members get access to all the material on the site for one month, can start at anytime, & for a fraction of the cost. 

Last week on Facebook, Christy announced that she would be offering the a la carte program at 1/2 off for the first 40 registrants, & I decided it was time to take the leap on the WR train! I immediately received this messge from Christy, “But you already eat healthy?” Well, for the most part, I do, but….I’ve gotten of track lately in a major way. Between birthdays/celebrations, moving, & just the hustle & bustle of life, I’ve gotten really off track. Last month, my diet & exercise program took a back seat while I worked through a major life transition,  at & drank a lot of crap & left me feeling heavy, sluggish, & lackluster. I’ve also been sick twice already this year, & I rarely get sick! So, I decided a swift kick in the you-know-where was just what I needed, & what better guides than Christy & Chad to help me get back into the kitchen, gym, & yoga studio? 

While everyone started this weekend, I had both a baby shower & birthday party to attend, so I decided to allow myself one final hoorah. Starting tomorrow - NO MORE EXCUSES! I plan to share my progress, a food journal, & full review of the program here!
